This was a very common vessel in the East Mediterranean Sea in the 18th
century. For some ones the name applied to all these types of vessels
with a decorated transom (such as a “Varkalas” hull) and rigged as a
“Polaka” (Ketch-brigantine). For others it was this characteristic
rigging
(with
a gaff sail and its topsail on the mizzen and with square sails on the
the single-pole foremast)
which gave the name “Vomvarda” to this combination of hull & rigging. It
was used as a commercial transportation vessel which could be found in
most East Mediterranean Sea harbours.
