Another singular kind of sail is “Sakoleva”. It is a square sail
commonly found in the Aegean Sea and in most of the
East Mediterranean Sea ports. The original word “Sakolefea” as a type of
sail is first encountered in Byzantine texts and was originally used to
denote some kind of a cloak. Its main characteristic is a diagonal yard
used to hold the ship’s main sail. Any vessel having this combination of
square sail & diagonal yard is named as a “Sakoleva”.
